Anchorage Vacation Packages
Set in south-central Alaska, Anchorage is a hip, coastal city and gateway to iconic experiences — from sun-soaked summer adventures to cozy winter getaways under the glow of the Northern Lights. Within 50 miles of downtown are more than 60 glaciers, six surrounding mountain ranges, 300 miles of wilderness trails and one of the largest state parks in Alaska.
Only in Anchorage can you meet a moose, walk on a glacier and explore a vast, natural park, all in one day. Hop aboard the Alaska Railroad to discover the country’s heartland. Rent a car and take a road trip of a lifetime. Whether exploring by foot, on horseback or traveling by boat, helicopter or small plane, the Last Frontier is never far away.
- Chugach State Park Slide 1 of 3: The Chugach mountain range not only creates Anchorage’s dramatic skyline, it is home to some of the most accessible outdoor adventures in Alaska.
- Denali National Park & Preserve Slide 2 of 3: An outdoor playground for all ages, Denali is home to six million acres of wild land and the highest peak in North America.
- Prince William Sound Slide 3 of 3: Shielded from the Gulf of Alaska by a string of islands, the protected waters of Prince William Sound are home to dozens of glaciers.
Rent a bike downtown and take off on the 11-mile Tony Knowles Coastal Trail, which hugs Anchorage’s coastline all the way to Kincaid Park. Kincaid Park is one of the best places in town to see a wild moose. Stop by the Anchorage Museum for a history and science lesson or feast on Alaska salmon or king crab in one of many local restaurants. Visit the Alaska Native Heritage Center to tour life-size replicas of traditional villages, watch live music and dancing performances and see local art demonstrations.
Alaska’s many famous rivers, lakes and protected coastal waters offer activities, including mild to wild whitewater rafting, kayaking through icebergs or snorkeling along the coast. Anchorage is the quintessential year-round destination for ecotourism, with plenty of opportunities to connect with nature, culture and the wilderness.
Take a scenic, hour-long drive along Seward Highway from Anchorage to the small ski town of Girdwood, where you can ride a tram to the top of Mount Alyeska. Or take an hour-long flightseeing adventure aboard a seaplane to Denali National Park & Preserve that includes a glacier landing.
Winter is a popular season in Alaska for seeing the glorious Northern Lights. You can also marvel at the handwork of world-champion ice-carvers or compete in snowshoe softball, ice bowling or ski and snowboard races in Denali National Park.
Art galleries, museum gift shops, retail stores and farmer’s markets feature traditional and modern art pieces, native-made baskets, jewelry, knives, wood carved totems, masks, paddles and more. Look for the Made in Alaska or Silver Hand emblems that signify products are made locally.
Once you try the wild Alaska salmon, flaky halibut and monster king crab plucked fresh from the ocean, it will be difficult to go back to eating seafood dishes you make at home. For meat lovers, moose, bear, elk, caribou, reindeer and even mountain goats are served in many restaurants. And, reindeer sausage is a local fast-food fave.
In addition to the local food scene, Alaska boasts a thriving beer and coffee culture. Currently ranked eighth in the nation for breweries per capita, you can taste handcrafted brews at a growing number of brewpubs in Anchorage. Anchorage is also known for its drive-up coffee huts. Alaskans love to dance, so grab your partner and head out to a pub or club for live music or some ever-popular square dancing.
